Choosing the Right Rakeback Deal

When choosing the right rakeback deal, you shouldn't just be looking for the highest percentage, or your favorite online poker room, but rather the type of rakeback that is paid. There are 3 basic types of online poker Rakeback:

  • Contributed Rakeback
  • Shared Rakeback
  • Dealt Rakeback

The Rakeback deal you choose should suit your style of poker play. Each rakeback deal is paid in a different way, each having specific benefits for different player types: loose or tight, aggressive or passive.

Below, we will discuss how each rakeback deal is paid, and which player type stands to profit the most from specific rakeback deals. Hopefully, this will help you in choosing the right rakeback deal for you.

Contributed Rakeback

Contributed Rakeback is paid to the player in accordance to how much he or she contributed to the pot. If you contribute 50% of the entire pot, your Rakeback will be paid from 50% of the rake. Contributing only 10% of the pot draws your Rakeback from 10% of the rake. This means if you're getting a 30% Rakeback deal, you would earn 30% of your percentage of the rake.

Contributed Rakeback is most beneficial to loose / aggressive online poker players. A loose players sees many more flops, therefore is eligible to receive Contributed Rakeback on all hands they put at least one chip into. An aggressive bettor generally contributes a good portion of chips to the overall pot. So long as you contribute more than the median amount (total rake divided by contributing players), Contributed Rakeback is the best online poker rakeback deal for you.

Examples of Contributed Rakeback: Ultimate Bet, Absolute Poker, Aced, Minted Poker

Dealt Rakeback

Dealt Rakeback also divides the total rake by the number of participants, paying Rakeback based on the median amount. However, Dealt Rakeback does not require a contribution to earn Rakeback. Simply being dealt cards in a hand that is raked earns Rakeback.

Dealt Rakeback is exceptionally valuable to tight poker players, regardless of their aggressive or passive betting nature. A tight poker player sees very few Flops, and only contributes to the pot if they have a great starting hand. The Rakeback paid per hand is generally the lowest by Dealt Rakeback terms, but since it is consistently paid without contribution required, it is an excellent program for tight poker players.

Examples of Dealt Rakeback: Full Tilt Poker, Poker Heaven

Shared Rakeback

Shared Rakeback is also paid only to players who contribute to the pot. However, the median amount (total rake divided by contributing players) is the amount your Rakeback will be taken from. So if 4 players contribute to a pot, resulting in a $2 rake, $2 is then divided by 4. The $0.50 median is what you are paid your Rakeback percentage from.

Shared Rakeback is highly profitable for loose/passive online poker players. As we said before, a loose player contributes to more pots than a tight player. A passive bettor only contributes the minimum amount to see the Flop, and if it doesn't improve their hand, they usually fold immediately. For this reason, a loose/passive bettor normally contributes less than the median amount to the pot/rake. If you are loose/passive online poker player, you should be looking for a Shared Rakeback deal.

Examples of Shared Rakeback: Cake Poker, Players Only

Tournament Rakeback

There is one more online poker Rakeback program known as tournament Rakeback, but it is not a standalone rakeback deal. Tournament Rakeback is sometimes provided in addition to a regular Rakeback program. Tournament Rakeback is paid as a percentage of all tournament fees. If you play paid tournaments, try choosing an online poker Rakeback deal that includes tournament Rakeback. If prefer to play only cash games, or free tournaments that don't require a fee, you won't need to look for Tournament Rakeback.
